Federal Employees Complain About "Inadequate" Palliatives And Seek Higher Pay

Federal employees all throughout the nation have urged the President Tinubu-led federal government to swiftly raise their pay and rebuild the nation's refineries in order to reduce the high cost of living brought on by the elimination of fuel subsidies.

The distribution of palliatives was deemed unsustainable by all respondents in a study of federal employees in the states of Ondo, Ekiti, and Osun.

theglobalnewsupdates is aware that the cost of gasoline rose from N185 per liter to between N580 and N615 after the current government's May 29 elimination of the fuel subsidy.

The result was a dramatic increase in the price of products and services, hyperinflation, and transportation costs.

As a result, among other steps to lessen the impact, the federal government recently announced the transfer of N5 billion to each state as a palliative.

The employees praised the federal government for the introduction of palliatives and the anticipated pay raise while bemoaning the hardship they had to face as a result of the subsidy's loss.

However, they highlighted that the measures wouldn't work if the country continued to import petroleum.

Palliatives, according to Leke Adegbite, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ondo State, are insufficient to ameliorate the hardships resulting from the end of fuel subsidies.

He urged President Tinubu to take action to make sure that the nation's refineries are operational.

"Something urgently needs to be done because palliative care is limited in scope and unable to handle everything. The political elite will control around 80% of the items intended for the general public.

Although the president might have the best of intentions, what about the governors who are examining the materials?

"And it is even obvious that nothing has been dedicated for federal workers from all these palliatives," he continued.

Mr. Adegbite acknowledged that repairing the refineries would be a difficult undertaking, but he insisted that it was important because Nigerians purchase petroleum every day.

"Our refineries need to be updated so that Nigerians, particularly federal employees, can breathe easier. He claimed that only working refineries could end the economic crisis.

Additionally, Bola Adeyemi, a member of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) personnel, claimed that the circumstances were intolerable, particularly for men who are typically the breadwinners in their families.

Additionally, Victor Amoko, the chairman of the Nigeria Labor Congress in Ondo State, claimed that cutting back on working days to ease the effects of the elimination of gasoline subsidies on employees would be detrimental to the country's economy.

The union leader urged the government to take into account providing shuttle buses for the employees' use, increase their pay or benefits, or offer other incentives that could lessen the impact.

As a result of the economic crisis, Clement Fatuase, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Ondo State, compared reducing the number of workdays each week to reducing the number of productive hours.

Another federal employee in Ekiti, Tope Balogun, claimed that the price of purchasing food had risen to an unaffordable level for him.

Mr. Balogun added that because he now reports for job three times per week, the high transportation expenditures were impacting his performance of his tasks.

He pleaded with President Tinubu to control food and gas prices so that civil servants could live comfortably with their families.

According to economist Bose Oluwalana, the government's rapid review of raising the minimum wage is the best way to ease the suffering of Nigerians, particularly civil officials.

Leye Adebayo, a federal civil servant in Osun, said the country's hyperinflation as a result of the elimination of fuel subsidies had rendered his meager salary useless, and he had been finding it difficult to provide for his family because of the increase in the price of food and transportation.

The hardship that federal employees were now experiencing as a result of the elimination of the fuel subsidy was also lamented by Bose Opayinka, a federal civil servant working for one of the departments under the Federal Ministry of Health.

Mrs. Opayinka pleaded with the government to help the workers, saying that she was no longer able to handle the rise in the cost of food and transportation.

David Tinuola, a different federal employee, said the government shouldn't expect the finest performance from its employees given the rising expense of transportation and food and the lack of a pay raise.

Tinuola claimed that the worst economic conditions have ever been experienced by workers and the general populace. He claimed that the rising cost of petrol forced him to park his automobile at home.

Samuel Atiku, an economist, asserted that the current economic crisis cannot be solved by cutting the number of days that employees are required to work.

The government implementing wage awards for employees while the minimum wage is being negotiated in 2024, according to Atiku, is the only viable approach.

Furthermore, rather than lowering the amount of working days, Nwokocha Chijioke, Executive Director of Motivator's Crib Africa, suggested that the government pursue other, more doable measures to lessen the effects of the elimination of the gasoline subsidy on the workforce.
