President Of ECOWAS Touray Claims That We Have Not Declared War On The People Of Niger.

Omar Touray, the president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), claims that neither a war of aggression nor an invasion of the Niger Republic have been announced by the regional body.

Touray, who made the claim on Friday while speaking to journalists in Abuja, was adamant that military force is not being employed in the West African country following a coup.

However, the president of ECOWAS emphasized that several sanctions, including lawful force, had been triggered.

He claims that while preparations are being made to have the force ready for deployment in case it is necessary to use force, the organization is optimistic that all diplomatic efforts will result in constructive action on the junta's behalf.

The military junta still has time to change its mind, according to the president of ECOWAS, as the community would not support a coup d'état.

Touray encouraged the military to restore civilian control as quickly as possible, reiterating that the three-year transition was untenable.

It is sad that the decision has been taken out of context and portrayed by the media as a planned invasion of Niger, he continued, adding that anyone contesting the ECOWAS stance needed to conduct more research.

Touray stated that it had been noticed that some powerful figures in the area had propagated the false information as fact.

According to the president of ECOWAS, the group has maintained to call for the speedy return of civilian authority and argued that its activities do not go against those of the Nigerese people.

He stressed that not just the use of force but also other measures would be utilized.

Touray emphasized that the community remained on the side of the people since they were entitled to the freedom to travel about the area. He also made a commitment that the community will continue to act in the people's best interests.

He continued by saying that ECOWAS never stated or implied that use of force would be used at the conclusion of the previous seven-day ultimatum.

The president of ECOWAS confirmed that the use of force was still an option, as allowed under the 1999 document, and was legal as part of the steps that will be implemented.
