Crowds Pour Into Munich For Oktoberfest As The Beer Flows.
Millions of people have descended to the Bavarian city to celebrate Oktoberfest's official start, and the beer is pouring.
At noon on Saturday, Mayor Dieter Reiter put the tap in the first keg to start the 18 days of celebrations with the customary shout of "O'zapft is" — "It's tapped."
In preparation for their first 1-liter mug of beer, revelers decked out in traditional lederhosen and dirndl costumes flocked to Munich's festival grounds early on Saturday morning.
Markus Soeder, the governor of Bavaria, questioned festivalgoers about their readiness for Oktoberfest to start before tapping the first keg, amid applause from the throng.
He declared, "I can only say one thing: This is the most gorgeous, largest, and most significant festival in the world."
Every year, the Oktoberfest draws roughly 6 million visitors. In 2020 and 2021, the event was postponed while authorities dealt with COVID-19, but it was held again in 2022.
This year, the price of a 1-liter mug ranges from 12.60 euros to 14.90 euros ($13.45 to $15.90), an increase of almost 6% over the previous year.
The 188th Oktoberfest, which is now taking place, lasts through October 3.
