Fuel Shortage Hits Lagos And The Surrounding Areas As Marketers Close Stations.

Lagos and its surroundings may soon experience a severe fuel scarcity due to the continued closure of filling stations by marketers in opposition to drivers and other product users.

The closing of stations reportedly began gradually when NNPC Limited reduced the volume of its imports to let large and independent marketers to participate in importation after the market was deregulated, according to a report by theglobalnewsupdates.

The incapacity of the marketers to import, mostly as a result of challenges with obtaining foreign exchange and volatility in the domestic market, is stated in the report as the reason why the issue became widespread.

NNPC Limited's drop in imports, which was intended to allow marketers to start importing, and the marketers' incapacity to import have created a gap that needs to be filled, according to a marketer who asked to remain anonymous.

If more individuals had continued to purchase the product, "the situation could have been quite bad.

"But the shortage is currently mild because many car owners are not driving frequently or have given up driving altogether due to the high cost of gasoline currently going for between N568 per litre and N590," the author writes.

In response, Chinedu Okoronkwo, national president of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, remarked, "We are still loading."

However, it was questionable whether all the goods hoisted at the depots made it to the filling stations because Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority personnel were not present to ensure compliance.
