Imo Labour Party Issues Urgent Call For INEC REC's Resignation Ahead of Gubernatorial Election
In a resounding call for transparency and accountability, the Imo State chapter of the Labour Party has fervently demanded the resignation of Sylvia Agu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Their resolute stance comes ahead of the off-season gubernatorial election scheduled for November 11, 2023.
Led by Barr Callistus Ihejiagwa, the indefatigable state chairman of the Labour Party, and buoyed by the impassioned Chris Okorondu, the youth leader, a formidable contingent of party members descended upon the INEC headquarters in Owerri to articulate their unyielding plea for a genuine, free, and transparent electoral process.
Ihejiagwa, undaunted in his call for integrity, pressed upon the Commission the imperative of flawless functionality of the BVAS, coupled with real-time uploading of results to INEC IREV.
He unequivocally emphasized that compromising standards should be inconceivable, asserting that the aspirations of the Imo State populace for transformative governance should not be belittled.
In the stirring address by the party's youth leader, Chris Okorondu, the prevailing hardship faced by the state's residents was poignantly underscored.
He fervently expressed the collective yearning to exercise their democratic right, utilizing their PVCs to select a government reflective of their collective aspirations.
With resounding unity, the message echoed: a plea for a truly free and fair election. Rigging and subterfuge find no quarter here.
The resolute voices of the Labour Party's youth segment rang out, resolute in their insistence that every vote must hold its weight.
In a measured response, Mrs. Emmanuela Opara, Head of Voter Education and Publicity for INEC in Imo, stepped forth to commend the Labour Party members for their dignified and non-violent protest.
With steadfast assurance, she pledged that the Imo state governorship election would be conducted with the utmost fairness, with INEC standing as an unwavering arbiter.
She assured, "The state will host a truly free and fair electoral process. Additional Resident Electoral Commissioners will be deployed, recognizing the distinctive nature of this off-cycle election.
The BVAS will perform seamlessly, as they always have. Legitimacy will reign supreme in this state's electoral proceedings."
