Norway To Assist Moroccan Earthquake Victims
Norway is giving the most severely impacted regions of the earthquake in Morocco NOK 10 million in life-saving aid.
The Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies will be the conduit for the funds, remarked Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, minister of international development.
The support already provided to the Moroccan Red Crescent Society through the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is supplemented by the cash from Norway.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies will use the cash from Norway in its efforts in Morocco to offer food, medicines, and shelter to the earthquake victims, according to Ms. Tvinnereim.
The Moroccan government is in charge of organizing the relief effort. The Moroccan government has not yet made a direct request for aid from Norway, the EU, or the UN.
Norway is prepared to offer more aid as soon as Morocco requests it. To guarantee that we have the greatest picture possible of the situation in the impacted areas, the Norwegian Embassy in Morocco maintains constant communication with the local authorities, according to Ms. Tvinnereim.
The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and the Moroccan Red Crescent Society, who both work closely with the local government and the UN, will use the cash from Norway to boost humanitarian relief and early recovery operations.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' Disaster Relief Emergency Fund receives an annual NOK 50 million from Norway. When tragedies like this earthquake happen, this funding is made immediately available. For its emergency relief activities, the Moroccan Red Crescent Society has already received funding from the Fund.
In recent days, a severe natural calamity also struck Libya. The northeastern region of the nation has seen catastrophic flooding as a result of Storm Daniel.
Although the situation is still developing, Norway is prepared to assist flood victims. According to Ms. Tvinnereim, "We are actively determining how Norway can contribute most effectively, and we are in close contact with our humanitarian partners in Libya."
