After Two Years, Netflix Will Cease Its Free-Access Offer For Kenyans.
Netflix has announced the discontinuation of its free mobile plan in Kenya, which provided users access to a quarter of its shows and movies without requiring payment for the past two years.
The company did not disclose the number of subscribers gained through this scheme, which was designed to attract new paying users.
While ending the free plan, Netflix is introducing an advertisement-supported plan priced at £4.99 ($6.07) per month.
However, it has not provided information on whether this new plan will be available in Kenya.
Streaming services like Netflix see opportunities for subscriber growth in low-middle-income economies like Kenya.
Still, they also face challenges due to fluctuations in purchasing power caused by factors like inflation.
Under the now-ending free plan, users in Kenya could watch both Western-produced shows like "Money Heist" and "Bridgerton" and African content such as "Blood & Water."
Netflix has been investing in more locally produced content in Africa as part of its strategy to attract new subscribers on the continent.
Additionally, the company has formed partnerships with local telecom firms to simplify payment processes.
