Exclusive: Tinubu's Special Investigative Committee Finds Mismanagement Of Anchor Borrowers' Fund And New N3 Trillion COVID Loans By Former Central Bank Governor Emefiele
A committee set up by President Bola Tinubu has reportedly revealed that former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, allegedly misappropriated N3 trillion from two projects, specifically COVID loans and the Anchor Borrowers' Programme Fund.
This revelation comes as part of an ongoing investigation into financial misconduct at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Jim Obazee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, was appointed as the special investigator to probe the CBN and key government business entities.
The investigation aims to uncover corruption and financial mismanagement during Emefiele's tenure as CBN governor.
Emefiele was suspended from his position and subsequently arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) earlier this year.
The investigation alleges that he misappropriated a significant amount of funds from various projects, including those related to COVID relief and agricultural programs.
President Tinubu has stated that the findings of this investigation into past lapses at the CBN will be made public, and a new leadership for the Central Bank has been established.
The situation is evolving, with claims of a potential plea bargain involving the return of N50 billion by Emefiele, although the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has denied reaching any non-prosecution agreement.
These allegations include charges of conspiracy, procurement fraud, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, terrorism financing, and economic crimes.
The investigation has also linked Emefiele to individuals involved in terror financing, further complicating the situation.
