Federal Government Launches Investigation In Meta, Opay asnd DHL For Alleged Data Breaches
The Nigerian government has initiated investigations into Meta (formerly known as Facebook), DHL, and online payment platform OPay for alleged data breaches.
These investigations were prompted by numerous complaints from Nigerians regarding the violation of their data privacy rights.
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is conducting these investigations, focusing on the data processing activities of the mentioned companies.
If found liable, these companies could face penalties, potentially amounting to two percent of their annual gross revenue, in accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
Complaints against Meta revolve around behavioral advertising conducted without explicit consent from data subjects, potentially affecting around 40 million Facebook accounts in Nigeria.
DHL is under investigation for allegedly violating data protection principles and standards, particularly regarding the confidentiality of personal data.
OPay is accused of opening bank accounts for individuals without their consent, which would constitute a significant breach of data privacy rights for around 40 million data subjects.
The NDPC has issued a Notice of Investigation to each of the companies involved as part of the ongoing process.
