Passport: The NIS Director Orders A Probe Into Alleged Misbehavior
Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Caroline Adepoju, has taken a unique step in addressing complaints of alleged misconduct by NIS officers at various passport offices throughout the country.
In a statement from the Service Public Relations Officer, Dr. Adedotun Aridegbe, Adepoju expressed concern about this situation and promptly initiated an investigation, especially in cases of noncompliance with ministerial directives related to passport administration timelines.
Adepoju highlighted that in alignment with the Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo's directive, the NIS recently cleared passport application backlogs nationwide.
This resulted in a new timeline of two weeks for processing and issuing passports, as announced on October 4.
To ensure accountability and address any grievances, both the minister and the NIS provided contact numbers for the public to report any misconduct by NIS personnel at their offices.
The NIS has been closely monitoring compliance at passport offices nationwide and in missions abroad.
Adepoju reported that as of today, most passport offices are successfully processing passports for applicants enrolled on October 11.
However, she noted that applications for re-issuance of lost passports and changes to passport data may take longer due to additional security clearance and correspondence requirements.
Adepoju appealed to the public to use various communication channels, including Twitter and Facebook handles (@nigimmigration) and the contact center (phone numbers provided), to report any form of misconduct by NIS staff for appropriate sanctions.
This unique approach seeks to improve the efficiency and integrity of the passport application process.
