How The Onyenwesons Shut Down Abia
On December 26, 2024, Abia State witnessed an unforgettable spectacle as the Ikwuano community erupted in joy following the conferment of prestigious chieftaincy titles on Chief Sunny Onyenweson, an international businessman from Ihiagwa, Imo State, and his wife, Chief (Mrs.) Gladys Onyenweson.
The momentous event, which brought together dignitaries, community leaders, and traditional rulers from across the state, was nothing short of a grand celebration of their outstanding contributions and deep connection to the people, both in imo and Abia States.
The prestigious ceremony took place at the palace of HRH King Larry Ogbonnaya Agwu, the Eze Onyeoruru 1 of Ajatanaigbu Autonomous Community.
The gathering included traditional rulers from all four clans of Ikwuano Local Government Area, such as HRH Eze Nwagwu Ambrose (Ezechimere 1 of Ugwuegbu), HRH Emeka Ezeoma (Igwebuike II of Oruigwe), HRH Eze Elder Evang Hart Agunnegbe JP (Ezechimere 1 of Eturonchara), and HRH Eze Onyekwere Joseph Anyaegbu (Dikeoha II of Umudike).
During the ceremony, Eze Larry Agwu, who described Chief Sunny Onyenweson as a long-time ally and a man of exceptional character, delivered a heartwarming speech.
He praised Onyenweson for his humility, generosity, and unwavering care for his people.
"This is a special event. You are a good man with a heart of gold, always caring for your people," Eze Larry said.
He further explained that although several chieftaincy titles had been conferred earlier in the year, the Onyenwesons' recognition was so exceptional that it warranted a separate ceremony in December.
Chief (Mrs.) Gladys Onyenweson was equally celebrated with the titles *Odozi Aku* and *Ugo Diya*.
Eze Larry also acknowledged her tireless contributions as a supportive wife, recognizing her as an indispensable partner who had helped uphold her husband’s legacy with grace and dedication.
Following the ceremony, the Onyenwesons, surrounded by friends and well-wishers, embarked on a jubilant return to their palatial home in Ihiagwa, Imo State. The atmosphere was electric as a large crowd of community members, family, and friends gathered to welcome the couple, accompanied by traditional entertainment that included masquerade dances and other cultural displays.
Chief Sunny Onyenweson, popularly known as *Akurulo One of Ihiagwa* and *Nwa Na Acho Nke Ya*, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people.
"I am deeply humbled by the honour and the outpouring of affection from my people. This recognition strengthens my resolve to continue contributing to their welfare," he said, visibly moved by the overwhelming support.
Chief (Mrs.) Gladys Onyenweson, too, shared her excitement, describing her husband as both her king and pillar of strength. "He insisted I be crowned Chief and not Lolo, "This title is unique to me and will remain a cherished memory." she said with a smile.
The event also drew a host of prominent personalities, including Prince Jerry Anyiwo, a political figure from Oguta Amaeshi Kingdom, former S.A. on Security to a former Minister of Education, Prof. Sam Anwuka, and Chief Sam Onyenweson, the brother of Chief Sunny Onyenweson. Their presence further amplified the significance of the occasion.
Ultimately, the conferment of these chieftaincy titles to the Onyenwesons was not just an honor—it was a testament to their profound commitment to the welfare of their people. The celebration of their achievements served as a reminder of their longstanding dedication to uplifting their community, and solidified their status as both cultural and philanthropic icons in Imo and Abia States..
The Onyenwesons’ incredible journey, culminating in this grand ceremony, left an indelible mark on the people of Ikwuano and beyond. It was a true showcase of leadership, generosity, and community spirit—truly a day that *shut down* Abia and Imo States with love, joy, and immense pride.
