Ngwoma Obube Ezeship: What The Court Said

How Quack Reporting Tried To Smear Prince (Dr) Alex Mbata

A recent blog post by one obscure blogger, Francis Ndimkoha making rounds on social media attempted to link Prince (Dr) Alex Mbata, the renowned philanthropist and industrialist, to the ongoing Ngwoma Obube Ezeship tussle. The write-up, published by an obscure online platform, is a lazy piece of quack journalism, riddled with falsehood and desperate attempts to draw attention through name-dropping.

For the record, Prince (Dr) Mbata has absolutely nothing to do with the traditional leadership matter in question.

The Imo State High Court, Owerri North Judicial Division, presided over by Hon. Justice L.C. Alinnor, on October 2, 2025, issued an order restraining both parties in the Ezeship dispute — Chinedu Ekeocha and Crown Prince Kemakolam Onukogu — from parading themselves as the Eze of Ngwoma Obube pending the determination of the substantive suit. The ruling was clear, balanced, and lawful. At no point did the court mention, refer to, or in any way involve Prince (Dr) Alex Mbata.

It is therefore baffling and laughable that anyone would seek to inject Mbata’s name into a matter that is strictly between the Ekeocha and Onukogu families. This mischief smacks of ignorance and desperation, the hallmark of poorly trained pseudo-journalists who see defamation as a career path. The attempt to associate a respected citizen like Prince (Dr) Mbata with such a local royal contest is not only misleading but malicious.

If the quack writer, Ndimkoha had even a basic understanding of journalistic ethics, he would have cross-checked the facts before publishing. The court did not indict, reference, or even hint at Prince (Dr) Mbata.

Instead, the judge ordered both sides to maintain the status quo — a fair, standard ruling in cases like this. Turning such a judicial directive into a smear piece against an innocent man only exposes the amateurism and lack of integrity of those behind it.

The truth remains that Prince (Dr) Alex Mbata stands tall as a man of peace, philanthropy, and development. His contributions to Ngwoma Obube and Imo State are visible — from empowerment programs to infrastructure support and scholarships that have changed countless lives. These are verifiable records, not online gossip from unknown bloggers struggling for clicks and attention.

By dragging his name into a case that does not concern him, the faceless writers behind that publication have only displayed their pettiness and professional bankruptcy.

Their desperation to stay relevant has turned them into instruments of character assassination — a shameful misuse of the media space and an insult to responsible journalism.

The Nigerians Union Of Journalists, NUJ and  media regulators must clamp down on this rising wave of online blackmail masquerading as news.

Freedom of expression must not become freedom to defame. Those who use digital platforms, such as Francis Ndimkoha to malign credible individuals like Prince (Dr) Alex Mbata must be made to face the full weight of the law.

The court acted within justice — it is those twisting the facts that should be restrained, not the truth itself.
