A New Fees Decreased In UNILAG After Discussion With The Students' Association

After meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, management announced a review of its new tuition.

On Thursday, the university's administration met with the student leaders under the direction of its Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola.

Usman Barambu, the president of NANS, led the students at the meeting, which was part of efforts to resolve the ongoing fee crisis.

Depending on the subjects of study and year of enrollment, the institution raised the payable fees from N26,000 and around N76,000 to N120,750 and N240,250.

However, the university announced the lowering of required student fees, energy bills, convocation fees, and other costs in a formal statement that was issued to Premium Times on Friday morning by the institution's spokesman, Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim.

The statement claims that the utility fees for all student categories have been decreased from N20,000 to N15,000 and the convocation expenses for all final-year students have been decreased from N30,000 to N27,000, respectively.

For new undergraduate students, the required fees were reduced from N176,325 to N166,325 for courses with lab/studio and from N126,325 to N116,325 for courses without.

The mandatory fees for returning undergraduate students were also reduced from N100,750 to N80,750 for courses without labs or studios, from N140,250 to N120,250 for courses with labs or studios, and from N190,250 to N170,250 for those pursuing careers in medicine, pharmacy, or other health-related fields.

Undergraduate dorms at the Akoka and Yaba campuses' hostel costs were also reviewed; they were decreased from N90,000 to N43,000; at the Idi-Araba campus, from N120,000 to N65,000; and at Sodeinde Hall, from N250,000 to N135,000.

The university stated in the statement that in addition to the mandatory fees being reversed, the NANS President also demanded the reinstatement of the Students' Union Government in UNILAG.

Following a student protest in 2016, the university decided to disband the student union.

  An Owerri magestarate court, last week, Friday, remanded "Fr. Mario Justus Chinonso Alozie" in  custody over allegations of homosexuality, but the case was adjourned to Wednesday, February 5,2025 , for consideration of his bail.
